Hey man, I’m thinking about getting into warhammer and I wanted to pick your brain about a few things. All the pieces that come with a game set of warhammer are completely unpainted. So in essence, I’ll be painting about 100 figurines.
What kind of supplies to you think I’ll need beside the obvious glue, paint, and brushes? I’ve also heard that I should do a base coat of black on all the pieces before I paint them. Is that necessary? Or, could I just spray paint them flat black first?
Most of the Warhammer paints that I see are acrylics. They are easy to work with, not affected by humidity, don’t smell bad, and dry evenly. The only problem is that being acrylic-based, they may chip or rub off after time. That’s why most people suggest a base coat first. I would suggest a light grey base coat instead. A primer will allow the paint to bind better, but it also lets you see the details better, which makes it easier to paint. I tend to use Wal-Mart’s Color Place $0.97 grey primer.
As for other supplies, a hobby knife (x-acto knife) is a must for me. I would also suggest getting the blue Duct Tape poster holder putty. I don’t know exactly what it’s called, but it is great for holding figures for spray painting or just holding figures in general. If glueing small parts, long-nosed tweezers are good. Light sandpaper is good if you get puddles of paint or glue in a place where it shouldn’t be. In truth, I did modeling when I was younger with the bare minimum of supplies, so it is quit possible. Most of the tools out there make your work easier. If you plan to model Warhammer stuff later on as well, you may want to look into other tools. If not, save your money.
It looks really nice, but that is what I would have expected from you! I have seen a lot of your work and the little details you put on little stars wars figures. You are a talented guy, so keep up the work. If I ever decide to build a model of anything, you are the person that I will contact… that goes for any computer help I need as well!
Hey man, thanks for all the tips. Yeah, I don’t know if I’m going to “model” them so to speak. There are some guys on ebay that made converted armies that are going for over a 1000 dollars. I don’t plan on that anytime soon. I would rather hoard my minatures for myself and mass an army that I would enjoy playing.
After I read more about the base coat they were saying to use black because you technically don’t paint over all of the base, which gives the figure depth. Do you think that I should start with grey, then do a coat of black? I really want my models to look good. I’m more of a gamer than a hobbiest, but I’m starting to change my ways.
I can get a good knife no problem; I’ve got a medium break away blade used for cutting poly urethane sheets. And I have all the sand paper I could want around the house.
Man, I should have never gotten rid of that drafting desk!
Well, if there are relatively few parts to be glued to the figures, then the gray primer is not necessary. But if you are painting light colors on the figures, black is a bad choice. Skin tones, yellow, red, and white will not go over black very well. You may need several coats as opposed to 1 or 2 on gray. But go with what you think you can handle. Everyone has their own ways of doing these kinds of things. Try one method on one figure first. If you don’t like it, change.
Hey good point. I’ll let you know how it turns out. I probably won’t start until after Christmas, but I’ll keep you posted. Know of any goo place to get model paints around the Kennesaw area?

Well, spraying them flat black is in essence a base coat. My suggestion is to use a stronger/hotter paint, ie one that binds to the plastic better (see this post http://unreality86.wordpress.com/2007/10/15/prime-time/)

Feel free to ask as many questions as you want.

This is pretty cool! My dad likes to do cars and planes. I have seen how much work goes into these and congrats. I know that it was a lot of work.
Thanks guys.

But enough of that. I was checking out some ideas for painting the models on the warhammer site, go here to check it out. http://us.games-workshop.com/games/warhammer/orcs/painting/default.htm

Hobbytown. It’s in the old movie theater, which is in the shopping center directly behind Target.
very nice model.
If you like you can check my plastic models site. You can put your models there too.
